Bell II –> Teslin (442 miles)

Since entering Canada I haven’t had too much of a problem waking up early considering it’s light out most the day, but this morning I overslept. I heard my 8am alarm go off and was surprised because it still seemed dark outside. I opened my tent and the sky was filled with dark clouds ready to dump on me. I got ready as fast as I could and hit the road hoping to stay ahead of any rain that may come my way.

Most of my ride was enjoyable. The cloud cover made for cool weather and cut down on any glare. I realized that I hadn’t had much cloud cover this entire trip and it was nice to have a change of sky scenery.

There’s a lot of talk in the news about how California is running out of water, but the entire northwest, including Canada, is in a serious drought. You can tell from some of my pictures how hazy it is from the forest fires, but it hadn’t gotten too bad until now. When I hit Iskut the air got especially smokey, so much so that my eyes started to water a bit.

I made a quick stop in Jade City to check out the Cassiar Mountain Jade store where you can see some jade stone cutting demonstrations. Unfortunately, everyone was on vacation except for one person manning the cash register.

I had planned to take a rest day the following day in Whitehorse so I wanted to get close enough where I didn’t have to ride too long. I ended up making it all the way to Teslin and camped on the side of the river. At the campsite there were two other riders heading for Alaska who were from Long Island, NY. They offered me a beer and we chatted about our experiences on the road so far.

After not too long, it looked like it was about to rain so I scrambled to get my tent set up and gear covered. It poured the rest of the night but my tent kept me perfectly dry and warm for the night.
